Here you will learn about the S.A. Pruem Winery whose roots in antiquity, date back almost 2,000 years to Roman times. No less impressive is the Pruem Family’s own history on this mid-Mosel River valley site - it dates from 1156!
Wines have been commercially produced here for 200 years. However, the most exciting developments have occurred in the past 33 years when Raimund Pruem took over the management of this family-owned property in 1971.

Since then, he has built this Wehlen-on-the-Mosel property into one of the most successful wineries. It boasts an international reputation. Furthermore, Raimund Pruem is one of nation’s most distinguished and distinctive of Germany’s top vintners. For not only does he lead one of country’s finest vineyards, which is located on the most preferred growing area along the entire length of the Mosel, garnering the highest honors year after year, but he also is an unmistakable personality as well.
Standing over 6’4” tall, Herr Pruem is known as “ Raimund the Red,” his flaming scarlet hair standouts out in any crowd; being a kind fellow, he also accepts the affectionate, good-humored chiding of close friends who call him “Der Specht” or “Il Pico” – the woodpecker!
Until recently the Winery was renowned exclusively for its Riesling, traditionally produced in the winery’s ancient cellars and then elevated using modern technology. Today, the product line has been enhanced with the addition of Weissburgunder/Pinot blanc.
The Winery is a founding, active member of the VDP (The Association
of German Premium Wineries), a consortium of Germany’s top producers.
