Historical Highlights of the S.A. Pruem Winery
Eight-and-a-half Centuries’ Experience & Expertise

Jodocus Prüm

According to numerous historical documents, the Pruem Family has held property and cultivated vineyards found in the villages of Bernkastel, Graach, Wehlen and Zeltingen since 1156. The same sites and holdings continue to this very day. Our modern history begins in 1842, however. That’s when Jodocus Prüm erected the famous sundial in those famous vineyards in the towns of Wehlen and Zeltingen. Thus, both these superlative growths derived their names and are now world famous. What began simple as a need for a means of telling time, is now a hallmark for finest quality. These are indeed a "must see" attraction in the Mid-Mosel Valley.

Today’s S.A. Pruem Winery was funded in 1911 when Sebastian Alois Prüm received his share of the old Prüm Family’s vineyard holdings and commenced to build it into a truly modern, contem-porary winery. The remainder of the property was shared by six other Prüm Family members.

Truthfully, with so many Prüms descending from Jodocus, it sometimes gets confusing! However, there is just one, and only one, S.A. Pruem Winery -- and it has been owned and managed by Raimund Pruem for more than 33 years. This VDP-Winery, under Raimund’s guidance and leadership, is accorded international recognition, is indeed one of the Mosel’s top stars, and is numbered among Germany’s most prestigious wineries.

Raimund Pruem himself is an unmistakable figure: like his Grandfather Sebastien A. (S.A. Pruem) he is a flaming-redhead. He is known as "Raimund the Red", "der Specht" (Woodpecker) and "Carrot-top". A big grin and a small bow-tie are some of his other trademarks. He’s tall – 6’4-and-a-fraction…but not as tall as grandfather "S.A." – who was over two meters – 6’9+!!! (Historical buffs should note that Sebastian A. served in Kaiser Wilhelm II’s Dragoon Mounted Bodyguard. Those were really big, tall, powerful men dauntlessly serving Majesty, a Prussian tradition dating back 150 years to Frederick the Great.)

As the head of a famous, traditional, top-quality Mosel winery, Raimund is a staunch supporter and maintainer of measures that preserve the integrity and traditions of his neighborhood. He’s a tireless advocate of clean farming and ecologically correct practice. S.A. Pruem Winery is a family undertaking: Erika Pruem, his wife of 30 years, runs the business aspects of the winery. The Guesthouse is her own, personal domain.

Daughter Saskia Aloisia (another S.A. Pruem) will be her father’s successor some day. She is now serving apprenticeships and making visitations to top wineries in Germany, Austria, the U.S., and around the world. Naturally, she’s also active in the day-to-day operation in Wehlen. Saskia’s sister, Jennifer, still studying business, undoubtedly will also be integrated some day in the winery.
